Our Story

It all started with our passion for horseshoeing…

Jim and Kathleen have been shoeing horses their entire lives. Jim began at age 12 with his father on the racetrack circuit and started shoeing professionally in 1982. Kathleen started her horseshoeing career in 1984. They both eventually joined farrier associations - Jim to the TPFA (Texas Professional Farriers Association) and Kathleen the WSFA (Western States Farriers Association). Both distinguished themselves as competitors in state, national, and international competitions. Jim earned a position on the American Farriers Team nine times and Kathleen helped establish the first woman’s international farrier team called WHOA (Women Horseshoers of America). Jim and Kathleen met each other through their mutual love of horseshoeing and married in 1999. They then went on to shoe for some of the biggest ranches in Texas.

Flatland Forge was born…

Jim had been handmaking farrier tools for himself and friends since the 80s. Word spread of the quality of his tools and he began to have more orders than he could possibly fill. He knew a fundamental change was needed in his business so in 2007 he bought his first CNC machine. Today Flatland Forge has 3 CNC machines, a fully equipped forging shop, and a variety of other equipment. They produce 27 different styles of hammers and a variety of forging tools. These tools have been used all over the world, from local farriers and blacksmiths to the top of the competitive arena. Flatland Forge has stood the test of time and is a brand you can trust.
